Choir

North Georgia Home School Band is offering two levels of Choir at Reinhardt University on Friday afternoons. Children's Choir is for students in 3-7grade/8-12 yrs of age, and the Teen Choir is for students in 8-12 grade/13-18 yrs of age.

The NGHSB Children's Choir is for students in3-7 grade/8-12 yrs of age. This choir provides the opportunity for children to sing a variety of choral literature styles appropriate for their age group and skill level. No experience is necessary.

Audition Song :  The first verse of  "My Country Tis of Thee."

Required Textbook for Children's Choir:
Essential Musicianship: A Comprehensive Choral Method, Voice-Theory-Sight-Reading-Performance Book One (Essential Elements for Choir Book One) ISBN: 0-7935-4329-0 , music as assigned by teacher, pencil, 1” black three-ring binder, and plastic sheet protectors for sheet music.

Students participating in the Children's Choir are expected to meet all of the goals and objectives provided:

  • acquire a foundation in vocal technique, music theory and choral repertoire to develop a well- rounded singer.
  • develop the correct posture and breath control needed to support choral tone.
  • understand the beat and rhythm.
  • be able to read and perform quarter, half and whole note rhythms accurately.
  • learn choral pieces included in the book and teacher-supplemented sheet music.


The NGHSB Teen Choir is for students in 8-12 grade/13-18 yrs of age. This choir provides the opportunity for students to sing a variety of choral literature styles appropriate for this age group and skill level. No experience is necessary.

Students participating in the Teen Choir are expected to meet all of the goals and objectives provided:

  • acquire a foundation in vocal technique, music theory and choral repertoire to develop a well- rounded singer.
  • develop the correct posture and breath control needed to support choral tone, and learning tall uniform tones.
  • understand beat and rhythm.
  • be able to read and perform eighth, quarter, half and whole note rhythms accurately.
  • identify staff and grand staff.
  • learn names of the lines and spaces.
  • identify middle C.
  • identify treble clef and bass clef.
  • be successful with pitch identification practice.
  • understand and be able to echo and read melodic patterns.
  • learn choral pieces included in the book, and teacher-supplemented sheet music.


General Music Class
NGHSB's general music class is for students in kindergarten and first grade (5-6 yrs old). This class is designed to give the children a broad foundation of musical skills and knowledge, as well as a love for music, in a group setting. They will achieve this by:
singing
playing instruments
moving to music
creating music
learning to read and notate music
listening to, analyzing, and evaluating music
learning about famous composers and works of music

Recorder Classes

NGHSB offers recorder classes at the beginner and intermediate levels. These classes give younger home schooled students the opportunity to learn how to play music in a group. The children will learn how to read music, play music on the recorder, and understand basic music theory. This is a great way to prepare them for beginner band. The students will also spend a little time each week learning about famous composers and wonderful musical stories such as Peter and the Wolf.

Beginner Recorder
Beginner Recorder is for students who are in 2nd-3rd grade (at least 7 years old) as of September 1st and do not have previous experience playing the recorder. The class will include instruction in the basics of reading music, learning notes on the recorder and playing simple songs.

Required Textbook:
Complete recorder Resource Student Book 1. (The CD is optional, but students enjoy practicing with it.) Books can be ordered on or before registration/instrument fitting day (August 27th). Required Materials: Soprano Baroque Recorder, folding wire stand, penicl, and 1" black 3-ring binder with plastic sheet protectors.

Intermediate Recorder
This class builds on what was learned in Beginner Recorder, adding more notes and techniques, as well as more complicated rhythms and more advanced music. The students are also introduced to the alto recorder and, depending on hand size and ability, allowed to play it as well as the soprano recorder.

Required Textbook:

Concert Bands

NGHSB offers concert band instruction on these levels: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. These classes are for students in 4th-12th grade/ 9-18 yrs old. NGHSB parents may also participate in any of these classes.

Beginner Band
Beginner Band is available for students in 4th-5th grade and up with little or no prior musical training (9 years +). This band provides the opportunity for the students to learn a variety of elementary band literature styles appropriate for this skill level. These students must attend the instrument fitting in August! An Instrument Fitting is a time when the students come in and see all of the different instruments used in concert band. We have trained personnel that allow the students to "try-out" the instruments. With the information gathered at this time, we are better able to determine what instrument your child would enjoy playing based on their aptitudes, abilities, and desire. See our Calendar page for date and time for the Instrument Fitting. If you already have an instrument that your child would like to play, please bring it to the fitting.

**Note: Beginner Band Percussion students must have at least 1 year experience on piano/keyboard or other band instrument within the past two years. Audition is required for percussion.

Required Materials: Instrument, Music stand for home practice, Pencil, 1” black binder and plastic sheet protectors for music, tuner and metronome.

Students participating in the Beginner Band are expected to meet all of the goals and objectives provided:

  • develop correct posture and embouchure.
  • learn how to put their instrument together correctly.
  • learn how to hold and play the instrument correctly.
  • acquire a foundation of basic music terminology and theory: note values up to eighth notes.
  • be able to correctly tune their instrument.
  • be able to correctly use the metronome.
  • learn and perform the first four concert scales, accidentals, enharmonics and articulation.
  • perform duets and band pieces.
  • develop music appreciation -- learning about different composers and their contribution to society, then and now.
  • After two years or less, advance into Intermediate Band passing a three-part evaluation: (1)Successfully play a chosen number of Essential Elements- Book 1 exercises, (2) Successfully play scales per All-State requirements for 6-8 grades. (Scales have to be memorized.) http://www.gmea.org/, (3) Successfully sight-read a rhythm study. (The student will be given a rhythm study to play on one note. This study will be taken from their book or a rhythm study sheets.)

Intermediate Band
Intermediate Band is available for students who are in 6th-8th grade and have either advanced up from Beginner Concert Band or have auditioned into it with approval from the Intermediate Concert Band instructor. This band provides the opportunity for the students to learn a variety of middle school band literature styles appropriate for this skill level.

*An AUDITION is required for all NEW STUDENTS enrolling in this band. Please make a note on registration form, so student can be added to Audition List and Schedule.

Students participating in the Intermediate Band are expected to meet all of the goals and objectives provided:

  • be able to demonstrate the concepts previously learned in Essential Elements 2000 Book 1 and build upon that foundation.
  • develop a daily planned practice.
  • read and perform note values up to sixteenth notes.
  • learn and perform compound signatures.
  • learn different styles of music.
  • acquire more skills in sight reading and continued theory knowledge.
  • learn and perform more band arrangements at this level of instruction.
  • learn and perform one more major scale and the chromatic scale.
  • understand the theory of minor scales and how music arrives at it.
  • learn and perform 3 minor scales.
  • after three years or less,advance to Advanced Band passing a three-part evaluation: (1) Successfully play a chosen number of Essential Elements- Book 2 exercises, (2) Successfully play scales per All-State requirements for 9-10 grades. Advanced Concert Band
Advanced Concert Band is available for students who are in 9-10 grades and have either advanced up from Intermediate Concert Band or have auditioned into it with approval from the Advanced Concert Band instructor. This band provides the opportunity for the students to learn a variety of high school band literature styles appropriate for this skill level.

*An AUDITION is required for all NEW STUDENTS enrolling in this band. Please make a note on registration form, so student can be added to Audition List and Schedule.

Required Materials: Instrument, Music stand for home practice, Pencil, 1” black binder and plastic sheet protectors for music, tuner and metronome.

Students participating in the Advanced Band are expected to meet all of the goals and objectives provided:

  • be able to demonstrate the concepts previously learned in Essential Elements 2000 Book 2 and building upon that foundation.
  • learn and perform theory with meter changes, compound meter (3/8, 9/8, 12/8), more advanced syncopation and rhythmic variations.
  • learn and perform 5 major scales added and additional minor scales.
  • learn and perform pieces in book focusing on minor scales and incorporate more band/orchestra literature excerpts.
  • understand and complete individual instrument study exercises that are given for more technique building outside of band class.
  • After two years or less, advance into Elite Band passing a three-part evaluation: (1) Successfully play a chosen number of Essential
  • Techniques - Book 3 exercises, (2) Successfully play all 12 major scales, per the All-State requirements for 11-12 grade. Jazz Band
Jazz Band is available for students who are in 9-12 grades. Students who enroll in Jazz Band must also enroll in either Advanced or Elite Concert Band. Students not previously with NGHSB must audition into Jazz Band with approval from the Jazz Band instructor. This band provides the opportunity for the students to learn a variety of high school jazz band literature styles appropriate for advanced musicians.

Students participating in the Jazz Band are expected to meet all of the goals and objectives provided:

  • understand how jazz began.
  • learn and perform jazz theory, blues, seven chords, syncopation.
  • learn and perform jazz rhythms.
  • learn and perform jazz rhythms through singing.
  • learn and perform improvisation.
  • learn different jazz techniques.
  • learn jazz music appreciation -- different jazz styles by listening to jazz composers and differentiating their expressions.
  • learn Latin, Rock and Bebop.
  • learn and perform different modes.
  • learn how to perform band arrangements by reading jazz charts.
